The ancient art of plaster figurines

Arte Barsanti is the antique and acknowledged firm established by Carmelo Barsanti in Bagni di Lucca where he was the first one to start the production of alabastrine plaster statues. Carmelo, born in Italy in 1879, emigrated from Bagni di Lucca to Rhone, France, where he started to be fond of provencal traditional christmas cribs. As he came back to Italy around 1900, he combined the french experiences with the plaster tradition of Lucca and Garfagnana. This union was the basis of the big popular diffusion of the italian Christmas crib.
